THE INDIVIDUAL - Bruny Island TAS Australia 2008

Sometimes I see things that make my head spin. Sometimes I see things and I take a second look and then a third. Sometimes I can’t define why it is I took the third look. This image is one such “third look”. While I was shooting it, as I normally do, I searched for a title or a word to convey what it is about the image that drew me to it. I came up with “The Extrovert”, The Misfit” The Non-Conformist”, but I felt these may be perceived as negative titles, so I gave this photograph a temporary name of “The Poplars” until I could come up with a title that conveyed how I felt when I took it.

The trees in the foreground, touched by patches of filtered early morning sun are beautiful. But the tree in the background is beautiful too. It is a different shape, leans forward, stands apart from the others and is bathed by full sun, while the others stand straight and tall in the shade. Despite the fact that the tree in the background is different, the trees live in harmony.

I saw a balance of shapes and light in the shot that I felt reflected that harmony.
